Martvili Canyons, Megrelia

The Martvili Canyons in western Georgia are a 3km long gorge with multiple waterfalls and outstanding natural beauty. Taking a raft up the gorge, the scenery is truly amazing, with the blue of the water, the rocks of the cliffs and the lush green flora above seeming to give all of the colours an iridescence. There are dinosaur footprints to see as well, so one can have a sense of the Jurassic. In the afternoon, there is a visit to the nearby Martvili Monastery complex.

Itinerary

Day 1
  • 7:00am Departure from Tbilisi towards Martvili, in Samegrelo.

  • Arrival at the Martvili Canyons. After embarking on a dinghy to proceed up the scenic gorge, visitors can also enjoy the pleasure of taking a relaxing swim, or even diving from one of the waterfalls. In Georgian, the area is known as “The swimming place for Princes”, perhaps because it is the most exceptionally beautiful place in Georgia.
  • 2:00 - 3:00pm Lunch break.

  • Arrival at the Martvili Monastery. The Martvili Monastery complex is built upon the highest hill in the area, and thus was of strategic importance. Originally, it was a pagan site where a large oak tree was worshipped for fertility and prosperity. The original 7th century Church was destroyed by invaders, and then rebuilt in the 10th century. Frescos from the 14-17th century survive in the main Martvili-Chkondidi Cathedral. The word ‘Chkondidi’ is roughly translated as ‘oak’ in the local Mingrelian language (which is not mutually intelligible with Georgian).
  • 9:00 - 10:00pm Return to Tbilisi.
