Itinerary

Day 1
  • 8:00am Departure from Tbilisi, towards Ananuri.

  • Arrival at the Ananuri Castle Complex, which is located on the banks of the Aragvi River and the present structure dates from the 16th century. The castle also overlooks the large and spectacular Jinvali lake (and reservoir). The castle has been the scene of numerous battles throughout history and was set alight in 1739, resulting in the Aragvi defenders being wiped out. The castle was in continuous use until the beginning of the 19th century.
  • Arrival at the Gudauri Ski Lift which goes up to the first level of the Gudauri Ski Resort. Along the way, there are views over the river called the White Aragvi and panoramic views towards the village of Mleta. It is also possible to see a monument relating to the Treaty of Georgievsk in 1783 and Georgian-Russian friendship. Ironically, the Russian Empire subsequently failed to help Georgia with the invasion by the Persians in 1795, allowing Tbilisi to be sacked.
  • 2:00pm Lunch break.

  • Arrival at the Kazbegi Gergeti Trinity Church, built in the 12-13th centuries on the summit of a mountain (at an altitude of 2,200m above sea level). From here, it is possible to see the Kazbegi mountain and its glaciers.
  • 8:00pm Return to Tbilisi.
